Who we are

McElhenny and Sheffield are names from the lineage of the firm’s principals. We take having our name on the door seriously. This means integrity and honesty – and that is what you can expect in all facets of your relationship with our company. Our team is committed to providing long-term investment results using time-tested, risk managed tactical ETF strategies.

Our Experience

McElhenny Sheffield has extensive direct investment management experience. Thus, the firm has the ability to offer individuals and institutions sophisticated investment strategies and wealth management solutions appropriate for complex and changing market environments. This ability to adapt to fast-changing markets and to meet the evolving needs of clients has been a hallmark of our organization since 2000. Our independent, disciplined, clearly defined, rules-based investment philosophy helps drive our achievement of the competitive returns we seek for our clients.

Our Philosophy

Our firm belief is that it is critical to avoid material losses – all of our strategies were designed with this in mind. We strive to achieve strong returns over time, not to simply “beat the market” on a short-term basis. We consider ourselves agnostic investors, as we are open to the entire economic and market capitalization spectrum for potential investment positions. As a firm we do not have a mandate to remain fully invested nor do we have a mandate to own, or maintain, a position in any particular sector. This agnostic approach keeps us from being conflicted by a long, equity only, bias.

History of MSCM

2000

Our founding partner forms MSCM to oversee an options-based hedge fund, managed as an absolute return strategy, following years of successful refining and implementation with his own personal Family Limited Partnership (FLP) assets.

2008

MSCM’s robust analytical research and disciplined approach performed well during a time that the market generally experienced significant losses.

2009

On the heels of sidestepping 2008 market losses, MSCM delivered positive returns in 1Q2009 (while the S&P 500 dove to 666). In response to investor demand, MSCM began managing all of some clients' liquid holdings in lieu of just the former strategy allocations and the firm broadened its footprint to become a full-service sophisticated wealth management advisor. Separately managed accounts were also embraced for the real-time transparency and custodial security benefits they provide to clients.

2013

MSCM started using a momentum-based tactical investment strategy for client assets.

2016

MSCM added a trend following model to its tactical ETF strategies in Trend Plus and Trend X. These strategies created a differentiated approach to risk management while still allowing clients the potential to capture broad market gains.

Today

With over 20 years of money management experience, MSCM now manages investments for individual and institutional investors as well as for other Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) as a subadvisor. The firm has grown from the founding partner to a team with many decades of investment and financial services experience.

  • Fee–only Registered Investment Advisor (RIA)
  • Fiduciaries for our clients
  • Direct investment managers
